April 2004
Jacques Garcia Collection of Upholstered Designs
Blends Chic Sensibility with Classic Comfort

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (April 22, 2004) - A series of sophisticated upholstery designs by Jacques Garcia was introduced by Baker at the Spring 2004 International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, N.C. The tailored silhouettes include three sofas, eight chairs, many with coordinating ottomans, a loveseat, a daybed, a unique, oversized ottoman in a scalloped, trefoil design, and sleek leather stool. The forms are finished in Garcia's exclusive line of fabrics and custom couture trims for Baker.

Garcia brings extraordinary comfort, layered sumptuousness, and crisp detail to his upholstery designs. Elegant, tailored forms are rendered using a French upholstery technique known as gainage, characterized by wrapping leather or fabric to the frame to create a defined silhouette. The crisp shapes are matched with gentle scrolled arms, deep, generous seat cushions, and sophisticated tailoring. Arms are inset with tight upholstered side cushions or draped with an oversized, half-full pillow, lending a gracious softness to the form.

The Tuileries Chair and Ottoman exemplify Garcia's ability to create timeless, classic design that is livable and approachable. The chair's curvaceous lines create the perfect foil for the blend of leather, rich wood and impressive scale. This intriguing adaptation was inspired by a style of chair designed for Napoleon I to reside in his Grand Cabinet room in Tuileries palace. The French upholstery technique of gainage is used to accentuate the frame's expressive character. Other elements include turned and tapered front and saber back legs, and a geometric, seamed back design.

Another inspired form referencing French Neoclassic design is Garcia's Alexandre Stool. Its bold form reflects the crisp lines achieved through the art of gainage. Offered in Red, Black or Brown leather, its clean silhouette is detailed with an extravagant Polished nail head trim detail.
