GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (April 22, 2004) - Baker introduced a sophisticated lighting series by Jacques Garcia as part of its collection debut at the Spring 2004 International Home Furnishings Market. The impressive offering, comprised of 21 elegant styles of table and floor lamps, chandeliers, and sconces, complement the extraordinary selection of casegoods, upholstery, exclusive fabric and soft goods line designed by world-renowned French designer, Jacques Garcia.

Attention to detail, beauty of materials, and timeless styling are evident throughout Jacques Garcia's designs. The lighting, handcrafted in Europe, is exclusive to Baker. Five distinctive categories - Lyre, Bouillotte, Platre, Cristal, and Accent Lighting - are represented in the collection. Each category is specific to its inspiration and similarity of design elements. The materials were selected for the individual appeal each imparts and includes solid brass in a variety of metallic finishes, lead crystal, and ceramic. Each lamp has a custom designed shade, and most are offered in a choice of Ivory, Red or Black to allow consumers to create a space according to personal choice. All lamps have an in-line, on/off lighting control switch and are Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Approved.

Lyre Group

The classic styling found in this sophisticated group of lighting is inspired by the shape of the lyre. The ornamental form of this stringed musical instrument was used as a decorative motif in French design during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Crafted from brass and finished in warm Antique Gold, Silver Plate, and rich Dark Bronze, lamps are crowned with shades in a choice of Red, Ivory or Black, each lined with Ivory which imparts a soft, warm light.

Bouillotte Group

The word bouillotte is often used to describe a style of lamp, but actually stems from the name of a card game that enjoyed great popularity during the Empire period. Inspired by the candle lit, opaque metal shaded lamps used to illuminate the table where cards were played, the Bouillotte designs by Jacques Garcia incorporate a unique Greek Key motif and brilliant metal olive or hand-blown, crystal Murano glass finial into its sophisticated styling.

Plâtre Group

The two lamps that comprise the Plâtre Group are inspired by the gallery of plaster models at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris with a contemporary allure that pay homage to France's fine arts tradition. The column form symbolizes architecture, while the urn symbolizes the decorative arts. Cast from plaster molds in age-old technique, Garcia chose ceramic in place of plaster for its strength and forgivable nature. Both lamps are designed to hold two 60-watt bulbs. The lamps are offered in two finishes, a dramatic, stark white, or impenetrable jet black, and come in a choice of either black pongee or white cinette shade.

Garcia marries shimmering glass crystal to muted silver for a superb rendering in classic detail. Taking its inspiration from the ornate candlesticks that graced the rooms of 17th century palaces, the Dauphine Lamp is offered in two sizes. The petite Dauphine lamp has an Antique Silver base; the 22-inch version is offered in Antique Gold. The bases are decorated with a subtle, edged detail both at the top and bottom. The surrounding Italian glass prisms are square cut to perfectly fit next to each other, catching and reflecting light and movement.

Accent Lighting

Unique character, rich materials, and strong form define Garcia's designs for the Accent Lighting series. Complementing shades and materials were hand chosen by Garcia to evoke an individuality and dramatic presence.

Jacques Garcia uses traditional components to create a chandelier of contemporary proportion and styling. The Lutèce Chandelier has a bronze crown from which three link chains are hung, and surrounds a centering, thin vertical rod used to suspend its three lights. The pleated shade is offered in Red, Ivory, or Black, and supported by a lower, bronze collar. The simplicity of scale lends a dramatic quality to this chandelier and a versatility that can move this piece from dining room or entry hall, or as an intimate focal point in the corner of a large living room.
